Ryan Adams Says Mandy Moore Is 'Luckily Not Terrified of Black Metal'

There is black metal in the heart of Ryan Adams. It is an obsession for the folk-rocker, who hosts a black metal talk-show on YouTube called "Night Sweats," where his female co-host, Balphazar, wears corpse-paint and groans her approval amid the skulls and candelabras. Adams performs the morose theme song on banjo.

So Adams was not being ironic when he wore a pentagram Slayer T-shirt a couple weeks ago at a private performance for KCRW-FM in Santa Monica, Calif., that will be broadcast and streamed online at kcrw.com this Friday night. He is the most metal of sensitive singer-songwriters.

"I love it," he told station DJ Jason Bentley during an onstage interview. "There's all these musicians in the world, and anybody that takes enough time to create a record or even think about the fantasy of rock & roll, it's a vulnerable place to be in, it's a huge thing to do. I hear that when I listen to black metal."

Adams performed no metal at the KCRW taping, instead focusing his 15-song set largely on the solo acoustic rock of his new album, Ashes and Fire. Sitting onstage at engineer-producer Bob Clearmountain's intimate Berkeley Street Studio, Adams explained that he's most happy while hearing musical variety that goes from Napalm Death's "Scum" to Toots and the Maytals to the Go Go's.

He noted that his wife, singer-actress Mandy Moore, is "luckily not terrified of black metal – I desensitized her to the entire thing." He recalled taking her to a shop in Norway called Nose Blood Records, where one of the gift items was made of real body parts. "Several of the spokesmen of this movement are totally dead and some of them impaled each other, burned a lot of churches down."

Adams also praised metal icons AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, and endorsed the newest album from Ratt, last year's Infestation. "It is so good. Put track two on, sit down on your couch and wait for fucking Memorex hair," he said, only half-joking. "The sickest guitar parts ever. It's like every song is 'Round and Round.' Every song is that good."

His own songs were not as loud, but were fueled on subtle playing and sudden vocal bursts of searing emotion as he swayed in his chair, strumming and singing with his eyes shut. The song "I Wait" was a mix of anguish and resignation as he sang, "I've been waiting here all night / If you're not going to show, we're not going to fight."

During the interview, he said he still writes his songs on a typewriter. "I'm super ADD. I have to work on something simple and keeps me focused," he said. "I like the sound of it and I like the permanence of when I see the lyrics written out. It makes me feel good. I can write on a computer, but there's too many options."

He also prefers an open window in front of him when he writes, not a glowing computer screen: "You can get the far away eyes thing – you can get that glaze when you're really lost in thought. And I can never attain that in front of a computer unless there's a vaporizer. You can't naturally space out."

Mandy Moore Heads To The Hill To Highlight AIDS Prevention

Singer and actress Mandy Moore joined a group of health panelists on Capitol Hill Thursday to highlight the ongoing achievements in the fight against AIDS in the U.S. and world wide, on World AIDS Day.

U.S. supported programs such as family planning and HIV/AIDS integration services are great contributors in the fight to achieve an AIDS-free generation, according to the Global Health Council.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic broke-out nearly 30 years ago and according to the Global Health Council these prevention programs are efficient, effective and in demand.

As the Ambassador for the non-profit organization Population Services International (PSI), Moore has travelled extensively around the world working to help improve the health and lives of people in developing countries.

Moore said that through her travels, she has been able to see first hand the toll HIV/AIDS takes on families who don’t rely on support systems such as family planning and HIV/AIDS integration services.

“Country-wide in Cameroon, there are 330,000 children who have lost one parent to HIV/AIDS, classifying them as AIDS orphans,” Moore said.

However, according to Moore and the Global AIDS Report, the overall growth of the AIDS epidemic has steadily declined since the late 1990s due to significant antiretroviral therapy over the past few years.

“The most recent United Nations AIDS reports on World AIDS Day highlights the fact that eliminating new HIV infections in children is completely within our grasp,” Moore said.

Ugandan physician and panelist Dr. Peter Okaalet said that in a country where family planning was almost a taboo in the past, the latest HIV/AIDS prevention and education efforts begin with teaching the young people.

It seems any conversation with Ryan Adams will inevitably turn to black metal and an intimate acoustic radio set is no exception. That’s what happened on Wednesday night as the singer-songwriter took part in an onstage discussion with KCRW Music Director and Morning Becomes Eclectic host Jason Bentley at Santa Monica’s Berkeley Street Studio. Sure, the focus was largely on Adams’ new album Ashes & Fire, but music’s dark side became the fulcrum around which the evening revolved.

Clad in a Slayer T-shirt, Adams, who performed two sets totaling 15 songs, pulled from both the new album and his past releases, spent nearly ten minutes educating the audience on black metal guitar tuning -- complete with visual instruction -- and recounted a visit to a certain genre-specific record store during his recent European tour.

“My wife, who is lovingly not terrified of black metal because I’ve desensitized her to the entire thing, and I went to a place called Nose Blood Records,” the musician said (his wife being singer-actress Mandy Moore). “That record store has so much black metal in it, I don’t know how it even exists… Literally on the wall they have a bracelet made of bone and hair and I remember looking over and M’s just going ‘Ugh’ and I’m like ‘Isn’t that amazing?’”

The connection between black metal and Ryan Adams, a notably introspective, emotional troubadour, may not be immediately apparent. But the musician, who self-released the metal-inspired disc Orion last year, is ultimately attracted to the genre because he says it displayed extreme vulnerability -- something his music overflows with. Adams’ performance last night, which was almost awkwardly intimate (“Don’t worry if you feel like this is really weird,” he told the audience as he took the stage), spanned his history as a songwriter. From his roots in alt-country band Whiskeytown with songs like “Houses On the Hill” to his solo work with “Oh My Sweet Carolina” (from 2000’s Heartbreaker) to brand new numbers like “Chains Of Love,” Adams revealed a consistency in this emotional vulnerability he finds so attractive in heavier music.

Actress Rachel Bilson felt her Disney dreams melting away when she realised she was up against Mandy Moore for the lead singing role in animated movie musical Tangled.

The former The O.C. star was thrilled to learn movie bosses were interested in auditioning her for the part of Rapunzel in the 2010 film, but her hopes were dashed when she turned up for her test and discovered singer/actress Moore was the girl she was up against.

Bilson explains, "I'm such a Disney nerd. Every Disney princess, every movie, I love it all... I had an audition for Tangled. I sang Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen and I went in right before Mandy Moore.

"I was totally mortified. It was just me and her and her husband, Ryan Adams... I was like, 'Hi, you can really sing!' I felt like such as a**."

After numerous guest appearances on TV shows, Mandy Moore seems poised to make a more permanent move to the small-screen.

The actress has just signed on to star in the single-camera ABC sitcom, Us and Them, her publicist confirmed Wednesday.

ABC has ordered a put-pilot of the family comedy, which will be told through the lens of newlyweds Annie (Moore) and Ben, and will explore inherent conflict between the families we grown up in and the families we make.

Night at the Museum’s Shawn Levy is set to direct, while Wedding Crashers co-writer Bob Fischer is penning the project. Moore’s manager, Jon LeShay — who was the music supervisor on three of her films, including A Walk To Remember, Saved, and How To Deal — will produce. Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements will executive produce along with Fisher and Levy.

Though this is Moore’s first starring role on TV, she’s certainly no stranger to the medium. The actress/singer was a guest-star on Grey’s Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, and Entourage (where she played herself). She’s also the voice of Mara on the animated series, TRON: Uprising.

The 26-episode animated series, set to screen on Disney Junior, will see Moore play ”the voice of the cat Oki, the sheriff of Nice and Friendly Corners, who’s charged with making sure the town upholds its reputation for being the friendliest town in the West.”

Much like “Tangled”, the project will offer Moore the chance to not only use her speaking voice but singing voice too.

“Oki’s Oasis uses the legend of the Old West to impart social skills and lessons for young kids about being a good friend and neighbor, reinforcing what parents are already teaching their children at home about forgiveness, honesty and sharing,” Disney Junior’s GM and Original Programming SVP, Nancy Kanter told THR.

“The series further demonstrates Disney Junior’s dedication to programming that highlights the importance of great, heartfelt storytelling as an impetus for learning and development,” she adds.

Singer/actress Mandy Moore is set to star in a TV sitcom.

The Tangled star has landed the leading lady role in upcoming U.S. series Us and Them, a light-hearted take on family conflicts.

The show will revolve around Moore's character, a young newlywed named Annie, and her husband Ben, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

It's not the first time Moore has appeared on the small screen - she had a recurring guest role on hospital drama Grey's Anatomy and has made cameos in Scrubs, Entourage and How I Met Your Mother.

Mandy Moore may have received acclaim for her vocal talents in Tangled - but she admitted it could have been very different as she almost skipped the audition.

The US actress, who lends her voice to Rapunzel, thought there was no possibility of her winning the coveted role.

"I nearly didn't go into the audition. I knew it was a Disney film and I thought that everyone and their mother would be auditioning for the role, and I thought to myself, 'Why am I going to set myself up for this disappointment?'" she said.

"But then I realised that I might as well throw my name into the hat. There aren't many auditions in the world where you get to sing a song and read a scene, so I went for it."

Mandy - who has lent her voice to films like Dr Dolittle 2, Brother Bear 2 and Racing Stripes - found the voice work quite challenging.

"That was a lot of fun, but it was also a lot of hard work because I didn't have any of the animation to look at. All I had to work off were a few sketches," she recalled.

"It can get pretty lonely in the recording booth, but it was also fun because it allows you to go into the depths of your imagination. It felt like I was a little girl playing pretend all on my own."

PENN QUARTER -- According to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll, most Americans believe U.S. investment in foreign aid currently makes-up 25% of the federal budget when, in fact, the figure is less than one percent.

And on Monday evening, actress/singer & PSI Global Ambassador Mandy Moore was joined by young leaders from a half-dozen leading global non-profits for a special event at the Newseum, to highlight the benefits U.S. investments in oversea aid have for Americans at home, as well as the general economics of global health.

With representatives from USAID, FHI 360, ONE, PATH, PSI, and World Vision all in attendance, the evening served as a de facto soapbox to tout “the power of 1%”.

In addition to a panel discussion featuring Moore and Ronan Farrow, U.S. Department of State Special Advisor to the Secretary of State for Global Youth Issues (and son of film director Woody Allen and actress Mia Farrow), among others, the night featured a poetry reading by writer/director Holly Bass, a performance by electronic experimentalist Yoko K, and a visual exhibit by the Corcoran College of Art and Design.

Earlier in the day, Moore was joined by PSI Board Member and Global Health Corps CEO and Co-Founder Barbara P. Bush, for a press reception discussing much of the same issues.

Moore (best known for her late ‘90s hit “Candy”) spoke about malaria prevention and a trip to Cameroon that she took with a bipartisan congressional delegation in August. Bush, wearing a bright green dress and black cardigan, spoke about international development work she's done through her organization, Global Health Corps. Both women stressed the importance of continued federal investment in foreign aid. “It would only benefit the U.S. economically if we continue investing this money,” said Bush.

At one point during the press conference, USAID deputy administrator Donald Steinberg, who was also on the panel, thanked Bush for global health advancements made during her father’s presidency. Though Bush smiled graciously, Steinberg backtracked and playfully said: “I guess you’re not technically a representative of the previous administration.”

Besides her careers as a singer-songwriter and actress, Mandy Moore has quietly carved out another role as spokeswoman for global humanitarian efforts such as clean water and fighting malaria, taking her to remote villages in African countries and, this week, to the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York.

Part of a crop of teen female singing stars that rose a decade ago, Moore explained in an interview with the Associated Press that her work for such causes as helped keep her life in the entertainment world in context.

"It gives me balance and perspective," she said by telephone from New York. "It's sort of given me an understanding of the other side of my job -- that it gives me the platform and reach that I can continue to spread the word on issues that I'm passionate about. They sort of go hand-in-hand."

Moore, now 27, has since 2008 voluntarily represented Population Services International, a Washington-based organization, in its child survival programs. She has helped launch and raise money for initiatives to help the organization provide insecticide-treated mosquito nets for children with malaria, anti-tuberculosis efforts, and for providing clean water. On Wednesday night, she recounted seeing how Pur, a water-filtering product made by Procter & Gamble, helped make dirty water drinkable on one of her Africa trips.

"She was very moving, talking about her own experiences," said P&G's Greg Allgood, who heads the consumer product maker's not-for-profit safe drinking water program. "She expresses herself better than a scientist like me. I can talk about the parasites; she talks about it from a very human perspective."

Moore also "draws a whole new audience" to humanitarian causes, Allgood said, adding: "My daughter thought it was pretty cool."

"I feel it shouldn't even be an issue; all of as human beings should have access to clean water," Moore said. "Unfortunately, that's the not the case for many people in the world."

She recalled a Sudanese man pointing to silt and other contaminants filtered out by the Pur packets and saying: "That stuff is in our bellies."

Moore has also traveled to Cameroon and the Central African Republic for PSI, and has volunteered time for other causes such as promoting cervical cancer education for the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation and GlaxoSmithKline PLC.

"I think it's our responsibility as individuals to effect change in whatever big or small contribution we can find time to do," she said. "I'm proud that, I think, I'm part of a generation that is socially conscious. I'm inspired by a lot of young people that I've met."

For a singer whose first Top 40 pop hit, "Candy," came at age 15 and who has made music and movies ever since, it's a change to visit people who have never heard her albums, seen her in magazines, or, for that matter, even know who she is.

"That's usually not the case," she said. "They're just incredibly hospitable and excited to welcome people from the United States, whatever their job may be ... (who) will come back to the U.S. and be able to speak on their behalf."

Moore's last album, titled "Amanda Leigh" after her birth name, drew critical praise as showing her maturing as an artist, and her movie roles have ranged from "A Walk to Remember" to the voice for Rapunzel in Disney's "Tangled."

For her now, life is "good, good. I'm just sort of focusing on the music stuff and writing now, and trying to figure out what my next move is going to be. It's nice to feel satisfied with this work (for PSI)."

Moore, who is married to singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, was featured a few years ago in the HBO series "Entourage," playing herself as the one who got away from the Vincent Chase character played by Adrian Grenier. The series recently ended with Chase heading off to finally get married.

Moore laughed when asked if she was invited to the wedding.

"No, no, I think I broke his heart," she said. "He didn't want to have anything to do with me after that."

Among the best-dressed of the celebrity attendees was actress-singer Mandy Moore, who sat front row at the Lela Rose runway show in a bright poppy-coloured, short-sleeve, tulip-skirt dress and an abstract bib necklace from the designer. She carried a faint blush-coloured clutch (from Westward by Emily and Meritt for Kate Spade New York) and wore striped strappy sandals. Moore’s look brought to mind Cyndi Lauper’s "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." She looked radiant, and her matching lipstick popped against her dark locks.

Mandy Moore Meets With Government Officials About Foreign Aid

Singer/actress Mandy Moore jetted to Washington, D.C. this week (begs03Oct11) to urge U.S. officials to allocate more funds to foreign aid.

The Tangled star addressed reporters and members of Congress at the Power of 1 Per Cent Press Conference on Monday (03Oct11) and stressed the importance of continuing to provide financial help to struggling countries.

Moore then teamed up with Barbara Bush, the daughter of former U.S. president George W. Bush, on Tuesday (04Oct11) to conduct advocacy meetings with politicians from both the Senate and House of Representatives on Capitol Hill.

Less than one per cent of America's federal spending budget is currently dedicated to foreign aid and global health issues.

Mandy Moore: Choreographer to the mountain stars

She may spend most of her time a thousand miles away teaching dance routines to stars (and up-and-coming stars) in Los Angeles, but the Summit County-bred choreographer Mandy Moore, daughter of Colorado theater phenoms Bob and Wendy Moore, still finds time to help out her hometown by arranging the routines for the annual hospital fundraiser, Dancing with the Mountain Stars. It's a generous contribution, especially considering how busy those L.A. producers keep her.

Moore works as a choreographer on the hit TV show “So You Think You Can Dance.” In season three, she earned an Emmy nomination for her “Table” routine set to “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics. This year she earned a second Emmy nomination for her work on the show, now in its seventh season.

“It was actually a big surprise,” Moore said, explaining that she sent in the work herself — including “Oh Yeah,” a jazz piece set to a Yello song, the contemporary piece “I Surrender” set to Celine Dion, and another jazz piece, “Boogie Shoes,” set to KC & the Sunshine Band — after the show picked other pieces to send in for consideration instead.

“I thought they were good pieces,” she said of her entries, “but you never know — one man's trash is another man's treasure. I was excited that they chose my pieces as Emmy-worthy. It's voted on by people that are in the business and your peers so when that happens that's really a nice pat on the back. I was very excited.”

There never seems to be dull moment in the Summit High School grad's career. Two days after completing this year's tour of “So You Think You Can Dance,” for which she served as supervising choreographer, Moore was off on other adventures, one of which will be the culminating performance of Dancing with the Mountain Stars on October 1. She has choreographed pieces for “American Idol,” “Dancing with the Stars,” and the kids' movie, “Oogie Loves in the Big Balloon Adventure” and danced professionally in TV shows and movies including “Malcom in the Middle,” “Austin Powers in Goldmember” and, “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” to name a few.

Each summer, she spends a week teaching a contemporary master class in Tropea, Italy. When she can find the time, she also teaches a Tuesday/Thursday slot at EDGE Performing Arts Center in West Hollywood.

The value of teaching
“Being able to still teach even though I'm working always fills me back up,” Moore said. “I think you give so much when you work on set or TV. It's nice to go back to my group of students. Everyone wants to just come in and dance. You can create what you feel like creating that day.”

“I've always felt like I've had teaching, dancing and choreography as even things in my life,” added Moore, who attended and taught at Summit School of Dance under then-owner Kim DelGrosso while growing up in Summit County. “She, I think, is the reason why I have a career,” Moore said of DelGrosso. “With Kim I learned how to love dance, and the bottom line is no matter what job I have … I love moving; I love to dance; I love to create. That love has helped me through every scenario I've ever experienced,” she said, adding, “I'd still be dancing even if I wasn't (where I am in my career).”

Moore's own teaching influence is wide-ranging too. “I just did an event with Rosie Fiedelman in New York called ‘Dancebreak,' Moore said. “I used to teach her at Summit School of Dance when she was 8 years old.”

To get her creative juices flowing, Moore likes to “listen to music and daydream a lot” and “get my body moving in space.” She is inspired by the “chance to put a new take on something old.”

“I think at this point in dance — I'm not going to say everything has already been created, but so much has been done and done well. I find inspiration in putting my twist or tweak on something that's already been done.”

“Dance is the only thing that I've found that tests me in all different ways,” Moore added. “I think it's part of the journey to get to know yourself. Are you ever going to get to the end? No. If you set a goal it's as much about how you get there as getting there. Dance is that. Dance is how I speak, how I breathe, how I feel. It's never really final. There is so much to enjoy along that path — and the highs and lows with all of that. There's a vulnerability with a journey,” she added. “It's never just one step; it's many steps, and you have to be open to what you're going to experience when you take those steps.”

‘A great show'
Choreographing one routine can take anywhere from three to 20 hours, but Moore still finds time to return home to Summit County each year to lavish her masterful choreography upon local stars for the St. Anthony Summit Medical Center event, now in its fourth year.

“We have eight fantastic dancers and I think the routines are going to be a lot of fun this year,” Moore said. “This group is definitely standing up to how good the rest of the groups have been and I think it's going to be a great show.”

Although she has a beautiful home in the “concrete city” of Los Angeles that she remodeled with her parents' help, Moore relishes her homecomings, saying, “there's a bit of exhaling that always happens when I land in Denver.”

Last January, she returned for an extended stay to choreograph as well as debut as director of “The Wedding Singer” at the Aurora Fox Arts Center with her sister Missy, who served as assistant director.

“I had so much fun doing ‘The Wedding Singer' with my sister,” Moore said. “As a choreographer you work closely with the director, so it was fun to be one and same. It was also fun to learn more about my sister … to share in her experience.”

Is it hard to find the time for so many professional and philanthropic pursuits? “Yes,” Moore replied. “I think sometimes it's hard to find the time to have a normal life. Then I think: What's a normal life? This is my life. It's as normal as it gets.”

Mandy Moore may have launched her career as another manufactured pop outfit from Florida (she once offered monetary refunds to those who had bought her first two albums), but she's serious about her music.

The multi-talented singer-songwriter and actress has a great number of influences ranging across several genres. Moore has demonstrated a fierce love of modern classics, often citing Joni Mitchell as her favorite singer, the namesake for her dog and her go-to source for audition songs. She's also said she couldn't live without Paul McCartney and The Beach Boys.

But Mandy's also into today's chart-toppers, too: She told Entertainment Weekly that she was so obsessed with Fleet Foxes, she decided to email the band's frontman Robin Pecknold about a future collaboration: "He was so nice — such a deep, intense music guy. He was really inquisitive about, 'What kind of record is this? What do you want to write about?' Obviously he wouldn’t have been listening to my music. I just thought it was so cool of him. He said, 'I’d love to, but we’re busy.' I was such a nerdy fan, like, 'Oh my god, I can’t believe he wrote me!'"

Of course Moore is a fan of her husband Ryan Adams as well. She often tweets her gratefulness and jealousy over his songwriting skills, once writing, "been listening to my hubby write insanely beautiful music over the past few weeks. blows my mind at how easy he makes it look. the nerve! :)"

(Flynn Rider) and Mandy Moore (Rapunzel) in this ‘early look’ at Disney’s Tangled which popped up recently on YouTube.lthough there is just a smidge of new animation and quite a bit of concept art shown in the featurette, nothing too surprising has been revealed that those who aren’t already familiar with the story of Rapunzel couldn’t surmise (that and the poorly guarded secret that Rapunzel’s hair has magic properties). One interesting observation however is that of the birthday lanterns.

Featured prominently in the original concept art released for the film as well as becoming the inspiration of a Christmas tree ornament from Disney Store, Mandy Moore briefly explains that they appear every year on Rapunzel’s birthday, but falls short of explaining anything further other than Rapunzel’s curiosity. Jakks Pacific will also soon be releasing

a birthday lantern of their own (which we managed to get our hands on) for the film which plays an instrumental loop from a piece titled I See the Light.

Walt Disney Picture’s latest fairytale animated movie hits theaters in November, but the movie posters are already popping up. Tangled follows the traditional tale of Rapunzel, with the Disney twist and top notch animation, of course. The movie features the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Ron Perlman, and Brad Garrett.

The international poster isn’t in English, but apparently overseas the movie is called Rapunzel, not Tangled. I’m not sure why, but I think it’s probably because of a little known movie starring Rachel Leigh Cook, which was also titled Tangled. That movie went straight to DVD here in the US, but did well overseas and it was very adult with a hard R rating. Disney probably didn’t want their latest kiddie flick associated with that movie. Disney treated reporters to a day at their Animation Studios in Burbank, Ca. where we heard all about Tangled, the studio's upcoming animated version of the "Rapunzel" fairy tale. We saw beautiful storyboards, learned how to animate Rapunzel's 70 feet of magical hair, saw how sound for the movie was edited and were told how characters were developed. We also heard animators and filmmakers praise Mandy Moore's enthusiasm and her lovely singing voice when she recorded the Rapunzel voice track and music.

We sat down with the singer/actress in the very room at the studio where she first met with Disney about doing the film. In the upcoming film, Rapunzel is turning 18 and is still locked in an isolated tower where she has lived her whole life. She was stolen as a baby and placed there by a greedy woman she has always called 'Mother'. When hot and "bad boy" thief Flynn climbs the tower to escape the authorities, it's love/hate at first sight. Rapunzel sees this fellow as her ticket out of captivity. We asked Mandy what she would do with her time if she were locked in a tower for years.....

TeenHollywood: If you were really stuck in a tower for years and years, what would you have with you there and do to stay sane?

Mandy: Music and writing. Maybe I would pick up something I've always wanted to learn how to do like sew; knitting or something. Something that would be relaxing and would help me get into a Zen state of mind and pass the hours. Learn how to meditate. I'd have a guitar, some paper and pens, maybe painting. That would be fun.

TeenHollywood: Rapunzel has basically been grounded in a tower her whole life. When you were a tween or teen, were you ever grounded?

Mandy: Yeah, I think I've been grounded. I wasn't a terrible kid if I do say so myself. I wasn't a rebellious kid by any means. Sort of like Rapunzel. I don't think she deserves the punishment and treatment she's getting but, for me, it was definitely no TV and not having dessert, not getting to go out with my friends. Yeah, that's grounded.

While the fall-to-Thanksgiving film season is usually rife with Oscar bait, it's also prime time for releasing family films. One such movie is the highly anticipated "Tangled," Disney's updated and traditionally animated take on Rapunzel, starring the vocal talents of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi.

Kicking off our Fall Movie Preview, we bring you a delightful chat we had with the ever-gracious and lovely Moore, during which she discussed non-typical femmes fatales, singing in front of a 65-piece orchestra and Levi's powerful pipes. MTV: How is Rapunzel different from the typical femme-fatale characters?

Mandy Moore: She's not the typical femme fatale or the typical Disney princess even, because: A) She doesn't know she's a princess. I think she sort of has this inkling that something isn't quite right in her life, [but] she's just really sort of motivated to find out what else is out there beyond this crazy tower she's lived in for 18 years. Having said that, she's very independent, she can take care of herself, and she's definitely come up with really entertaining ways to keep herself busy.

MTV: Is the Disney take on Rapunzel the same as the original fairy tale?

Moore: Pretty much. She has an overprotective mother who tells her she's not missing out on anything, and it's a big bad world out there and it's too scary and dangerous and she'll be eaten alive, literally, if she decides to venture out into the world.

MTV: What was your reaction to Disney changing the film's original title, in an effort to lure in more young boys?

Moore: I think I was initially a bit taken aback, only because people know the story of Rapunzel, so when you say you're working on "Rapunzel," it's sort of a no-brainer, you don't have to explain it to people. But as the title sort of sunk in, I understood the decision behind changing it. The movie is so great and so cute, and people are going to see the trailer and know what the story is about. I guess you sort of have to leave it up to the brains at the top. They know what they're doing.

MTV: What can you tell us about this particular story? Can you tease any romance?

Moore: She sort of comes face to face with this stranger who precariously ends up in her tower, and he's very handsome [and] he knows it. He's quite the ladies' man, if you will. Somehow, they get roped into going on this adventure together and start to see a different side of one another, and potentially a romance ensues. There's [also] a few musical moments.

In the mood for a good ol' classic Disney film, and "The Princess and the Frog" didn't quite do it for you? Well, the Mouse House is looking to solve that problem with their upcoming "Tangled," taking the personalities and vocal talents of Mandy Moore and—surprisingly!—"Chuck's" Zachary Levi and using them to tell the story of "Rapunzel."

MTV News sat down with Mandy to talk about the film and what it meant to the singer-turned-actress. Hint: it was the opportunity of a lifetime.

"I'm definitely the quintessential girl who grew up watching 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Aladdin' and the like, so it was probably one of the coolest things I've done thus far, being in the studio with Alan Menken and a 65-piece orchestra," Mandy said. "Being there with the orchestra and hearing the score sort of come to life and what the feel of the movie was going to be at different parts was like, 'Oh, OK, now I really get what we're doing.' So that was definitely a moment for me. It was the first time I met Zach [Levi]."Zach, who is best known for being a nerd-turned-spy in NBC's hit series "Chuck," was not initially known for his vocal talents. However, Mandy promises that he has plenty of skill singing and will impress many with "Tangled."

"They wanted to cast actors in the roles who could also sing, and I had no idea that he sang, and it turns out he's like a big musical-theater nut and had that in his background," Mandy said. "He has a beautiful voice, but he has the perfect voice for something like this. He's such a sweet guy, and he's so funny in the movie, but I think his voice will astonish people."

She describes the story as very similar to the original Rapunzel fairytale, despite the film's name change to attract more male viewers than "The Princess and the Frog" did. Mandy promises that fans will understand the general premise of the film from its trailer, but there will be more adventure to come once Zachary's Flynn meets Mandy's Rapnuzel.

Moore's battled malaria with Population Services International and promoted World Water Day, among her many causes. In 2008, Moore (in a S↑2C tee, at right) appeared at the first landmark event that raised more than $100 million for cancer research, and two years later, she's back again, taking your donations and speaking out against these deadly diseases.

On screen, Moore has played a teenager afflicted with leukemia in Walk to Remember and a woman in need of a colostomy in Grey's Anatomy. These are serious issues for someone who was once referred to as a "pop princess." When the movie giant failed to attract a male audience to its last film, The Princess and the Frog, they switched the Brothers Grimm fairytale title Rapunzel to Tangled. Some critics have said they're not fooling anyone.

Vince has been in love before, and it has negatively impacted his career before. Remember Mandy Moore? So the fact that he’s in love is no surprise. What is shocking is how quickly and deeply he appears to have fallen for Sasha. This “relationship” is really frustrating me. I don’t know how much time we’re supposed to believe has elapsed between their first meeting at a party and the present day, but it’s ridiculous. He immediately began treating her as if she were his girlfriend, and the embarrassing part is that she doesn’t appear to be as into him as he is into her. Every week I want to yell at my TV, “Vince you’re playing yourself!”

After meeting with new Air-walker director Peter Berg, Vince manages to secure a small role in the film for Sasha, in hopes that she will forego the adult film she’s been offered. To make matters worse, one of her co-stars in the movie would be her ex-fiancé. Vince really doesn’t want her to take the part, but this is what she does and he can’t change her. When she finds out about the role in Air-walker she’s excited, but she still may take the adult movie gig. Vince gets upset because he thought she said she wouldn’t do it if she could get another legit part. Sasha says she never agreed to that. This “relationship” is untenable, and I’ll be glad when it’s over. Hopefully the writers are only putting Vince and Sasha together to underscore his temporary out of control, addictive lifestyle. When (if) Vince sobers up, I hope he shows Sasha the door.

While Vince and Sasha are beefing over dinner, Ari and Mrs. Ari are at the same restaurant. Amanda Daniels is also there having dinner with a small group of men. Earlier in the day Ari bumped into Dana Owens (Queen Latifah), and she told him that Amanda was now working to bring an NFL team to L.A. Assuming that she vindictively stole his opportunity, Ari goes berserk. He tries to ambush her at her office but she’s not there. He’s trying to make up with the missus by spending more time with the family and leaving his Blackberry at work – so he has to race over to the restaurant to meet his wife. He gets his assistant to plant his Blackberry in the bathroom, and he later retrieves it like a scene from The Godfather. He calls Amanda, who says that she’s been trying to reach him. Before she can fully explain, he drops the phone in the toilet. When he gets back to his table, she comes over to have a word with him. Mrs. Ari says that it’s not a good time, but before Amanda can walk away Ari completely rips her a new one in front of the entire restaurant. He says that he’s never hit a woman but he would like to pummel her face. Ari is a funny guy, but you know what? I’ve never really liked him. Lots of people say he’s their favorite character, but I think he’s a mean prick. He’s a complete asshole to everyone except his wife and certain clients. Amanda calmly explains that she didn’t leak the tapes to the media; a vindictive assistant did that, and she fired him. Furthermore, the gentlemen at her table are from the NFL and they had been discussing bringing him on board. Now? Forget it. Nice going Ari.

Johnny has finally gotten on board with Johnny’s Bananas, the animated creation of Billy Walsh in which he will star. Things are looking up for him. Turtle and Alex are trying to get the tequila company off the ground, and have managed to secure funding from Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban to expand the production plant in Mexico. For some reason Carlos isn’t keen on the idea. I guess he fears that he’s in danger of losing his small, family business to a rich American. The episode closes with Turtle, Alex, Billy, Johnny and Lloyd all chilling out, celebrating Johnny’s show when Lloyd discovers a big bag of coke. Will they stage an intervention? Or is Vince really surrounded by “yes” men? I can’t wait to find out.

So I am sitting at my house channel surfing thinking I am in for a boring evening cause I am finding nothing to tickle my fancy when suddenly…could it be? Yes! Mandy Moore’s “A Walk to Remember” has just started on HBOFamily. (I call it Mandy Moore’s because lets be honest Mandy knew what she was doing when she chose this flick…plus it was the first time we saw her as a brunette. loves.)
After settling in with some popcorn and a diet I took to my FB and twitter to announce the amazing tv find. As stated both places, this movie immediately takes me back to high school. Here is why: In hs I was a total emotional crazy mess. (I mean as much as a high schooler can be.) I was SO dramatic
and was part of a 3-way friendship which was the center of my world/source of my emotional turmoil. This was partly because my two friends were my best guy friend and my best gal friend and they were in love. Talk about your third wheel scenerio.

ANYWAY, the reason I say this is cause it made me reflect on my life then and I realized that I was an extreme emotional cutter. Like if I were sad about my horrible situation (told you I was dramz full) I would sit and listen to sad music and cry. really? yes. Well, sadly upon further thought I soon discovered that not much has changed since hs.

I mean I certainly am not as outwardly dramatic and I actually try to avoid the dramz these days. However, I still have a serious problem with setting myself up for emotional heartache and ridiculousness. And this all comes back to the reason I got my tattoo.

The tattoo of the number 19 I got on my left wrist I got for multiple reasons. 1. It is the title of a Tegan and Sara song I love, 2. the whole song is about Tegan, and age 27, looking at her then current love/heartache situation and realizing she was doing the same thing she did at 19 and how she had not changed at all (similar to my realization), and 3. the song is about loving love and feeling like you are falling for someone before you even really know them…hello story of my life.

After appearing in season 6 of the medical drama, actress Mandy Moore will be back to the halls of Seattle Grace, reprising her role as the character Mary. The new season of the show kicks off this September 23rd.

An exact date or episode for when Moore will appear has yet to be announced. However I’m sure as the time approaches we’ll get a heads up . Moore appeared last season in the two part season finale and managed to hike the ratings with her must see performance. Hopefully she can do it again!

Classics series due out November 24. Its called Tangled and it is very loosely based upon the Rapunzel folk tale. Here is a look at the film’s poster artwork, which debuted via Yahoomovies.

You can check out the teaser trailer for Tangled at BSC as well. In the enchanted tale of romance and adventure, Zachary Levi (television’s Chuck) is Flynn Rider, a dashing thief, while Mandy Moore voices Rapunzel, a princess who was kidnapped as a baby and stashed away inside a tower. Donna Murphy, Brad Garret (Everybody Loves Raymond), Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy) also join the voice acting cast.

Mandy Moore has come a long way from the days she was a diminutive teenager driving a lime-green VW Bug on MTV and singing about missing her boyfriend like candy. Now, the veteran singer/actress is appealing to a more mature crowd, teaming with beverage company Crystal Light to launch a social networking site for her fellow women.

The site, uPumpItUp.com, is designed to promote female wellness by creating a support system to help visitors reach their chosen personal goals. Moore, 23, is one of five advisers who will contribute videos to the site challenging members to change their lives. So far, she has released four challenges: Do Something Daring, Find Kitchen Confidence, Photograph Your Life for a Month and [Get] Out on Your Own. Users are also encouraged to create their own challenges and report their progress.

Though Moore made her national debut as a pop singer in 1999, she is best known today for her acting roles, including star-heavy flicks American Dreamz, Because I Said So and License to Wed. This is an actress we like to refer to as Orlando's Mandy Moore, as if "Orlando's" was her first name on her birth certificate. She spent Thursday with friends and family at Walt Disney World. We loved her in "Saved!" but since then she's also had movie roles in A Walk to Remember, Because I Said So and others.

Mandy Moore didn't appear in the old 1980's rock and roll
movie, but she might as well have played Ellen Aim. As soon as I saw the first
act, I squinted my eyes at the TV, confused by the singer on stage who bore a
striking resemblance to Mandy Moore. The girl on stage was none other than a
19-year old Diane Lane. I hope I'm not the first person to point out the two's
facial similarities, because it's definitely worth a look:

Watch the movie and you'll see even more examples. Diane's role in Streets
of Fire, which mixes singing with a little bit of acting, is just the type
of role that Mandy would excel at. And if somehow the two similarities go beyond
looks, I just want to point out that Diane Lane took about 3 years off after
that movie. so for those that can't wait for Mandy Moore's next project, just
remember, it could be a longer wait if Mandy were to follow Lane's career path.
